Comics & Superheroes: For Adults Only

Akira (1988): Violence and recreation drug use abounds in this action-packed anime classic catered to the thinking viewer.

The Avengers (2012): Superhero movies are inherently violent, and the Marvel universe movies are fairly tame, but this—arguably the best so far—is a bit more adult than, say, Spider-Man. It also requires some depth of knowledge of their universe and characters, so save it for the ultimate kiddo fans. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Iron Man (2008) are other solid ones.

The Dark Knight trilogy (2005-2012): Christopher Nolan’s installments of the comic series are far superior to anything done before. His Dark Knight is just that—dark—and his intrigues would likely scare the pants off children.

Deadpool (2016): Not amazing, by any means, but it’s decently funny. That said, it’s incredibly crude and adult humor, so keep it away from the kiddos.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): Like a mix of The Avengers and Deadpool, with notes of adult violence and comedy, but not overly so if you’re a particularly lenient parent.
